The Lost Weekend... Day

"The parts at work didn't arrive on time, so there's no work today, which isn't much of a disappointment to me since I've seem to caught a cold or something. Despite sleeping for over 10 hours, I still feel like I was trampled by the lunch crowd at the Country Buffet. My head's floating on a cloud, my body is sore, and my throat feels serviced. Hopefully i'll be either on the mend or at least in workable condition for tomorrow, for my wedding anniversary tomorrow. We don't have anything special planned, other than the fact that my Mom's volunteered to watch the kids, so my wife and I will actually spend some quality time together.

Cable modem's on the blink, so i'll likely be spending a good part of the afternoon trying to get it going. Hopefully its the modem and not the router."

Well, that was earlier in the day, and I'm retro-reporting now, since I have now resumed normal blood flow and have found my pulse back. Basically, toward the end of Thursday of this week, I could feel the sickness knocking on the door of my immune system.

"Who's there," I ask.

"Land Shark," the virus would answer, abusing my nostalgia for old SNL comedy.

So on Friday morning, I was doing okay, but as the day progressed, I started to FAIL. And not like fail, but FAIL. In dramatic caps. Failure on a grand scale. It started out with a big of fatigue, some very tired eyes, and then I was just unable to really stay awake. We watched "Enchanted" in the afternoon and I was pretty much out for most of it. When I woke up and my wife had to go to work, I continued to nap on and off, or just lumbered around to keep the children off spikes and plastic bags, separating the candy from the drugs, and uttering really bad parental warnings like, "Please be quiet, or I'll whack you." I didn't mean it of course, it was the virus talking, much like the viruses in modern day zombie movies. Except I didn't eat brains, I just walk around handing out bad parenting.

Anyhow, I did manage to go out and fix that router problem. I swapped out a new modem from Comcast for free, but just as I suspected, the router had nothing to do with it. I just got a slick new router for good times. I did have to spring for a freaking new wireless router, and this time I went for the Linksys motherbumping dual antenna porntastic freakmaster. It was 60 bucks, but it has been worth it. Wireless reception is good, no more dropped connections, and I even pick up occasional alien transmissions between ships. Turns out they don't sanitize between probes. Eww.

So, here's a consumer report for you all. Don't buy Belkin. It looks fancy, it's priced a little better, but it's absolute sodding crap. I've had two things from them and they both failed. So there.

The kids watched "Follow That Bird" and in my feverish mid-slumber, I thought about how every Sesame Street movie has essentially the same road-movie muppet gets out of town formula. Throw in a few guest spots and songs, and it's another movie. In the middle of the movie, a blinding light floods my closed eyes and I thought, "Well, there I go. Not in a spectacular motorcycle stunt involving hoops of fire or during a cucumber eating contest, but during a kids movie from a fever. I opened my eyes and the light was still there, but then I just snatched the flashlight from Zoe and laid on it. Once the kids were in bed, I just laid down and slept some more. Woke up a few times, including once with a bladder full of scalding pee, twice sneezing my chest off, and once thinking that I was possibly having a stroke because all I could think about was all the buttons that my mind was accumulating, and they had nowhere to go so they would eventually force my brain to melt down.

I woke up again, and this time it was 2am. Everyone was asleep, and I felt like my hip had been kicked out of place. I went downstairs where it was cooler - seemed like my hallucinatory fever had finally fizzled out, and I just sat on the couch and bummed out in the dark. I actually slept for four more hours, then went back to bed for the rest of the morning. Luckily by the next day, I was feeling a lot better, and the worst of it was over. It's probably going to be the last time I "cook" my fever out, which they don't recommend because of silly side effects like brain damage.

But the most important thing really was that my Thursday night and all of Friday was lost, and I was ready for my Saturday, which was our fifth wedding anniversary.

January was Suck Month

I don't know what it was about January, but it just sucked royally. I should be a little careful though, the month isn't quite over. Better look out for saws dropping from the ceiling or the like.

Right now, the kids are sick - they are coughing a great deal, first hitting Alex and then moving through to Zoe. The doctor ruled out strep throat and is testing for whooping cough, but it's still pretty inconclusive. One night was so bad that he'd cough and wake up crying, leaving my poor wife to stay up with him most of the night, sitting in the rocking chair consoling him. She definitely earned a Mother of the Year award for that one. I slept mostly because I knew I couldn't do any less than 5 and a half hours of sleep. I would implode or have some structural failure if I tried.

So now Zoe has it, but we're laying on the cough medicine, which he hates, to at least let them have some rest at night. Being sick and sleep deprived makes for a very cranky and irritable kid. They're on the mend, but we're kinda trying to take it easy, stay indoors, and watch Daddy waste away his weekend with PS3 goodness.

Work was hard. I'm on my feet for the 10 hour day, walking back and forth, doing lifting and sorting and the like, and holding in repressed anger at my co-workers for redefining the personification of "Lameass". In addition to that, we had a few 58 hour weeks, and either one or two days off. I don't care who you are, but after you work that much, you really start to lose sight of everything else, like who you are and people around you. I was dreaming about work, it was so bad. My coworkers and I got into a high tension discussion about my supervisor taking roll call in the morning, and marking people up for tardies and ultimately firing the repeat offenders with as little as one warning.

Their argument was that it was just a few minutes, and that shouldn't matter. I argued that if it was a big deal for them, then just show up on time. Work starts at the same time everyday. My co-worker accused me of living too closely to work (7 minute drive), and that some people had to commute on the freeway and traffic was what it was. I said again, work starts the same time everyday, and a lot of people show up on time or early. Then I put it to him this way, if the supervisor came to him and said, I'm going to take a few minutes from your lunch today, how would he feel, since we were practically stealing time when we show up late but still filled in the timecard as 40 hours. He said it doesn't matter, since we leave work a few minutes early anyway.

At that point, I do this thing when I'm done talking to him, which is to say, "I don't know." repeatedly until he leaves me alone, then I just put on my earphones and walk away. It's much like aruguing with children when I'm at work. They want it their way, have no logic to back it up, and can't see more than 2 seconds ahead of what the consequences will be.

One of my other projects in the new future, in addition to finishing the wedding, planning the trip to California, and all the other daily crap that I ignore, will be to go through some emails from my wife and pull up excerpts of kid adventures. I've neglected to report a lot of their shennigans and so I'm trying to remedy that.

Beats

I've been glued to my PSP more than usual (which is to say that instead of a face, I have a PSP on top of my neck now) because of a game I downloaded off the Playstation Store. It costs a grand total of $4.99, but it plays like a full featured game, except with mucho customization. In that sense, I mean you can import your own songs and play with it. Like Guitar Hero in a sense, without the big guitar. I play two different songs in two different modes up there. Normal is usually not hard at all, almost leisurely. Hard is exactly that, I don't even make it through half the song without being lost. But it's tons of fun, mostly because I don't get stuck with iffy songs I don't care about, just songs that I like.

So my job status finally went through, and on Monday I'm no longer a contractor with my company, I'll be actually a Team Member. I have orientation on Monday, and the weird thing is yesterday I got an overnight package in the mail, a welcome packet from my company that I could have gotten on Friday or on Monday, but I guess they wanted me to have it yesterday. The funnier thing is that they included huge maps of both buildings - not so much tour maps, but like specific floor maps, including where all the production lines are. And they are all wrong. The production floor and I imagine some of the offices were renovated in the last 4 months so everything's moved. I would imagine anyone following the maps would be more lost than anything, with dated maps that are poster sized. I'm feeling pretty good about being a Team Member, which means medical and for the first time since I had kids, the kids can actually be double covered now. We couldn't in the past because we worked for the same company, and that stupid company got around not insuring two employees if they were married. Nice. Also looking forward to the slight pay bump - pretty proud of the fact that I went back from their original offer (the audacity!) and got my wage bumped up an extra 75 cents (even though I asked for 50 cents). I don't feel too guilty because like a Cover Girl, I'm worth it. Ooh, that's a different metaphor.
And overtime would be more worth it too. The rest of December looks to have more overtime. Yeech.

Getting a little sick, maybe a cold or something, but it's got me fatigued with a dull headache. Hopefully it's short lived.

Anyway, photos.

That's my ebay listings for today. I'm liquidating a bunch of crap that's been laying around, either untouched or unwanted junk I've managed to accumulate through time that I don't want to just toss out. There's probably tons more, and I'll sell more stuff through Craigslist when I got done with my videography business, but it's a start. The older I get, the less crap I'd like to gather.

---

Have a job interview tomorrow at a cinema, have absolutely no idea if they need a popcorn sweeper, a toilet cleaner, or a shift manager. Absolutely no idea what the pay would be. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if it's worth the time. Scary thing is that if no one replies to my resumes, I might have to take the job.

---

Kids are sick. Not terribly sick, but they're coughing and they're sniffling. Blame it on the stupid weather I suppose, but my allergies have been going haywire as well. They have slight temperatures and intially, Alex tossed some cookies as well. I told my wife that my allergies were so bad that I didn't even smell the mess I was cleaning up. Whoopee!

---

Having a rather blah Sunday - it's Summer but you couldn't tell from looking outside - seems like October with the blustery winds and the chilly temps. We're just staying indoors because of the weather and they're sick.

Resident Evil 4 is cool.

Desperate Measures

Well, our dwindling funds and my slow spiral into insanity made me do the unthinkable today. I applied for two walking distance jobs, at a video store and at a movie theater. I know I'm over-qualified - I knew that when one of the questions were, "Are you over 16?" and they didn't really bother to list if there were any colleges attended. But I figure if nothing else pans out, I'll still have something embarrassingly minimum wage to tide me over while I look for something more substantial. I would at least give them six months or something. And free movies can be a perk anyway.

---

To much of my chagrin, I went to Game Crazy today to pay for my pre-order of Resident Evil 4 for the Wii, and they gave me the dumbest excuse - That the vendor ships the game on the day it is released and they won't get it till tomorrow. Yes, that completely betrays the point of actually having a release date for a product. So I called Fred Meyer because I thought they might have it, and they don't. C'mon, guys. It's a release date! Next thing you know, I'll go to see Transformers on the 4th of July and they'll say it'll be the next day - they're shipping it from L.A. Silly. I gave up because I didn't want to run all over town looking for a copy. Looks like I'll just have to wait till tomorrow for a copy of this AWESOME game.

I'd admit, in the last week or so a couple of my friends have expressed interest in getting a Wii for the exercise, and to tell everyone the truth right now - I don't get that much exercise from the Wii. The excellent "Wii Sports" is a blast - but it's much more fun as a group activity. Doing it yourself seems like, well, doing it yourself. Much like playing a fighting game by yourself - it ain't bad, but you feel like there's something missing.

But RE4 is exactly what I've been waiting for - even though it's technically a 2 year old game that's a port from Gamecube. But free-rein aiming, a bit of the old slashy-slashy with the Wii Remote... it's all good. I'm not a big horror-adventure guy, but that game sounds like it'll just cheer me up.

---

Alex's got some sort of bug - his appetite isn't intact and he's got a little bit of a temperture. I've got the allergy headache, so my head's somewhere else. Seems like the guys are out of it in this house. Hopefully it'll go away soon.

---

Finally watched "Pan's Labyrinth" after reading about all the acclaim, and I'd have to say that it was a really good movie, but was somehow marketed as something different. I think the fantasy part of it was played up a lot in the ads, and yeah, it's a big part of the movie, but the true essence of the movie is far less fantastical, and actually quite grim and dark. But definitely a good one to catch in your lifetime.

June 29 is somewhat a big day. iPhone's coming out. Sicko is coming out. And Ratatouille is coming out. I'll only be able to indulge in one of those.

Ugh.

Haven't written in a while because there's been quite a bit going on. Today for instance, I was pretty much off my feet because I was sick. Again. Bit of a fever, bit of fatigue, and slept through most of the day. Just not feeling all that great. On top of that, there's been extra work because weddings are just popping up left and right.

----

I met a friend yesterday that I haven't seen in like 12 years, since we both graduated from high school. These days she's busy with her two boys, and just being a stay at home mother. She picked up the conversation pretty easily, and I realized how incredibly rusty my Cantonese was. She didn't speak to me that much in Cantonese, but when she talked to her son I couldn't understand most of it. Yeah, when I can't words to a 4 year old, that probably means I need a bit of help.

But throughout the conversation, I just got that feeling that I was behind in life. Not really got a career going, not really pulling in money to support the family. It was a bit sad. She told me that I looked the same, except for my facial hair, which she didn't like all that much. I guess I'm not catching any breaks from the Asian community. We had to leave after about 2 hours because the kids hadn't eaten lunch, but it was a good meeting.

----

I had a stroke of bummer luck for a bit, just getting overwhelmed with work and then having not very good nights with the kids. Allergy season's kicking off so there's been some times whereby I'm either knocked out by the medication which gives me a serious fatigue problem, or I'm sneezing my head off.

But the other night, oddly enough after office hours, I got an email from Apple asking me if I wanted to go to a job seminar. I had applied months before, so it was a little surprising hearing about it. Did some homework about it, and I'm still far away from an actual job offer, so I'm not going to jinx it. The seminar isn't till the end of the month, and details are still non-existant. But I'm pretty excited.

---

We watched "Night at the Museum" with the kids tonight, and Alex really enjoyed the dinosaur. Zoe got a little bored and she was climbing all over the couch. The kids were up a bit later than usual, but I think they really enjoyed the movie.

Okay, I'm not as clear minded as I thought I was.
